Brief Introduction to Ceramic Coatings and Their Role in Vehicle Protection

Ceramic coating for cars has revolutionized vehicle protection, offering a durable shield against environmental contaminants and enhancing the car’s aesthetic appeal. This advanced technology not only preserves the paint but also makes maintenance easier. Let’s delve into the world of ceramic coatings, exploring their benefits, application process, and maintenance tips to keep your car looking pristine.

Understanding Ceramic Coating

Definition of Ceramic Coating and Its Unique Composition

Ceramic coating, also known as nano-coating, is a liquid polymer applied to the exterior of a vehicle. This coating chemically bonds with the factory paint, creating a layer of protection. Unlike traditional waxes and sealants, ceramic coatings provide a more robust shield against environmental hazards.

How It Differs from Traditional Waxes and Sealants

  • Longevity: Ceramic coatings last significantly longer than waxes and sealants, often up to five years with premium products.
  • Protection: They offer superior protection against UV rays, chemical stains, and minor scratches.
  • Maintenance: Ceramic coatings reduce the need for frequent washing and waxing, saving time and effort.

Why Choose Ceramic Coating for Your Car?

Durability: How Long-Lasting is Ceramic Coating?

Ceramic coatings can last between 2-5 years, depending on the product and application method. Premium products often come with extended warranties, ensuring long-term protection and peace of mind for car owners.

Hydrophobic Properties: Understanding Water Repellency and Its Impact on Maintenance

One of the standout features of ceramic coatings is their hydrophobic properties. This means that water and other liquids bead up and roll off the surface, making it easier to clean and maintain.

Enhanced Appearance: Achieving a Glossy Finish and Preserving Paint Reflectivity

Ceramic coatings enhance the car’s appearance by providing a glossy finish that preserves the paint’s reflectivity. This results in a car that looks brand new, even after years of use.

The Comprehensive Application Process of Ceramic Coating

Applying a ceramic coating to your car involves a detailed and meticulous process to ensure the best results. Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of the steps involved, whether you’re doing it yourself or hiring a professional.

Step 1: Thorough Cleaning & Surface Preparation Techniques

The first and most critical step in applying ceramic coating is thorough cleaning and surface preparation. This step involves:

  • Washing: Begin with a detailed wash using a pH-neutral car shampoo to remove dirt, grime, and contaminants.
  • Decontamination: Use a clay bar to remove embedded contaminants that regular washing can’t eliminate. This ensures a smooth surface for the coating.
  • Drying: Dry the vehicle completely to prevent water spots, which can interfere with the bonding of the ceramic coating.

Surface preparation is essential to ensure that the coating adheres properly and provides maximum protection and longevity.

Step 2: Necessity of Scratches Removal and Paint Swirls Correction Before Coating Application

Before applying the ceramic coating, it is crucial to address any paint imperfections:

  • Inspection: Carefully inspect the car’s paint for scratches, swirls, and other imperfections.
  • Polishing: Use a dual-action polisher with appropriate polishing compounds to correct these imperfections. This step is vital as ceramic coatings will lock in any imperfections if not corrected.
  • Paint Correction: This process can be time-consuming but is essential for achieving a flawless finish. It ensures that the ceramic coating bonds to a perfectly smooth and clean surface, enhancing the car’s appearance and protection.

Step 3: Overview of Tools Used in the Application Process for Even Coverage

Applying ceramic coating requires specific tools and techniques to ensure even coverage and optimal results:

  • Applicator Pads: Soft, lint-free applicator pads are used to apply the coating. These pads ensure that the coating is spread evenly without leaving streaks or residue.
  • Microfiber Towels: High-quality microfiber towels are essential for buffing the coating after application, removing any excess product, and ensuring a smooth finish.
  • Infrared Curing Lamps: Professional detailers often use infrared curing lamps to speed up the curing process and ensure a durable bond between the coating and the paint.
  • Protective Gear: Gloves and masks are recommended to protect the applicator from chemical exposure and to ensure that oils from the skin do not interfere with the application process.

DIY vs. Professional Application: Which is Right for You?

DIY Methods: Cost-effective and Convenient

For car enthusiasts with experience, DIY ceramic coating can be a rewarding endeavour. It is cost-effective and provides a sense of personal accomplishment. However, achieving professional-grade results requires time, patience, and a high level of precision. The perfect shine is the Holy Grail of the automotive appearance industry.

For over a century, professionals have sought a magical solution ― a bullish, long-lasting shine product that is quick and easy to apply and will repel dirt, environmental contaminants, and rain so the vehicle has the best protection on the market.

Given the array of kaleidoscope of products invading our visual sense, what is the difference between finishing products? How far have we come in the world of “coatings”?

Essentially, nano-technology in the detailing industry utilizes a 9th century Mesopotamian trick. A trick in which pottery-makers created a metallic nano glaze made from copper, silver salts, and oxides that created a glittering effect on pottery that up through the Renaissance, made it distinctive for its ancient, shimmering luster. The term “coating” is nothing more than a new term to identify these incredibly durable polymers. Because that’s all these nano coatings are, polymers.

Known as “Surface Science”, products now allow the transfer of particles from one surface to the other so that the nano coating becomes inseparable from the car’s paint surface. Automotive coating manufacturers claim their formulas “bond” chemically and physically to the paint surface, however, all bond loosens over time!

Is hardness the only pinnacle of a good coating?

Every Automotive coating manufacturers has been boasting their SGS Certification on hardness. But think about it – the body of the car flexes as it drives, as the heat and cold play their part on the chemistry of the metal (hot metal can bend more while cold metal is more stiff). When coated with glass and ceramics, two very rigid materials that lack the ability to be flexible, it wouldn’t take long for the coating to crack and break.

And does the warranty works?

Those 7-year warranty coatings are only valid if you can verify you’ve reapplied the product every year or two and washed the car once a month. One of the big reasons these products work so effectively is the amount of prep required to apply the coating. After washing, claying, and buffing the car, you’re often required to wipe down the entire surface with some alcohol based cleaner. This intensive prep period is highly effective in removing all contaminants and oils from the surface to allow the coating to bond to the paint as best as it can.

What is the downside?

Before you can even apply the coating, the surface must be 100% free of surface blemishes, which applies to even brand new vehicles. A multi-stage paint correction involves washing the car, claying, buffing, and keeping it pristine while applying the coating. That last step is particularly difficult for anyone who isn’t working in a clean indoor facility.

Nearly all of these coatings use extremely harsh chemicals that when you open the bottle, smell like a nice sampling of jet fuel. After speaking with many detailers who specialize in applying many of these coatings, they mention how they need to take frequent breaks to refrain from going light-headed. These harsh chemicals contain high levels of VOC’s.

Our Ceramic coating does not only form in a structured atomic manner; it is also flexible. It offers the gloss that will make your car gleamed while flexible enough to bounce off the contaminants and allows your vehicle to flex. Most importantly, we care for our Auto-Artisans. Ceramic Coating is the only coating in the local market that is VOCs-Free; it does not pose any health hazard at all.

As the leading Auto Detailer in Singapore, EA Detailer started an exclusive partnership with Sonax to offer the world’s most powerful ceramic coating. Top 5 reasons why Ceramic Paint Protection Coating is a must have for the discerning automobile enthusiasts who want their cars feeling like it never left the showroom .

5 Benefits of Ceramic paint coating for cars

1. Best Car Paint Protection

Our ceramic coating provides a resilient, flexible protective surface to the car’s body, shielding against all forms of foreign matter which might compromise the integrity of the paintwork. On the daily commute, a car will be subjected to attacks to its body, from debris, UV damage and foreign contaminants. Having a ceramic coating ensures that the paintwork of the car is sealed in a protective layer that prolong the longevity of the car’s paintwork.

2. Durability of Ceramic Coating

With our state of the art equipment and superior technique, we ensure that the coating will be bonded tightly to the car and will not be affected by most external forces. This is in sharp contrast to more traditional vehicle coatings such as wax, which wears off when exposed to environmental elements and foreign contaminants

3. Hydrophobic Effect and Resistance to Dirt

No one car is perfectly smooth, polishing and applying a coat to any one car is a science. The more uneven or perforated a surface is, the easier it is for dirt to find pockets and pits to cling on to. After polishing and claying of the surface, we apply a layer of ceramic coating which works at a molecular level to ensure that that dirt that stick to the surface of the car can be easily removed. Most surface contaminants and dirt will skid off, leaving the car in showroom condition for longer periods of time.

4. Elimination of Constant Re-application

Unlike traditional methods of getting your car “coated”, a single application of Ceramic coating and proper care and maintaining, Ceramic Coating will withstand a long duration of time and EA Detailer is proud to claim that our ceramic coating has a 10-year warranty that it will not spoil your paintwork

5. Time and Cost – Effective

Through this article, EA Detailer will give you the best paint protection at a special price. That’s savings in terms of money and time.

What are you waiting for? For the aspiring car enthusiast or the busy family man who wants the best hassle-free protection for our beloved vehicles. Make an appointment with EA Detailer now.

Amidst the array of multiple coatings flooding the market, the choice of selection becomes a journey into the abyss of trial and error. Especially when everyone is boasting that their product quality is superior than the rest.

It seems inevitably that the harder the coating; the better it is. But hey, doesn’t hardness also equate to brittleness?

Conventional formulations that build extremely hard and inflexible networks are not suitable to offer optimal paint protection. In practice, such layers hard as glass have proved to be breakable, as thermal influences and impacting particles can quickly cause cracks and brittleness.

“Sonax CC36 Ceramic Coating” was especially designed for use in professional vehicle valeting to protect new or professionally restored paintwork surfaces for a long period.

Sonax R&D team developed an especially advanced long-term paintwork protection. It flexibly adapts to the paintwork surface and lets dirt particles simply bounce off – “The force of flexibility”. Additionally, less dirt particles are more easily washed off – that is what Sonax calls “easy-to-clean effect”.

Sonax CC36 is a dense network of modified siliceous nanoparticles that develop a particularly resistant protective layer – just as a protecting “second skin” that acts as a flexible shield against climatic and environmental influences. The nanoparticles reactively couple with the paint structure and the surface becomes highly consolidated in covalent bonding.

Alright, you got your new car. It is in lime green (Hey, you are a free spirit); or maybe you wanna to exhibit your passion for life (Fiery Red). Then now, you wonder should you go to those guys that do car paint protection? You have just been out of pocket for a new car, you are reluctant to spend more money. The devil and angel in you start tearing you apart.

Yet, let’s us tell you like most things, prevention is better than cure.

A good paint protection system should protect your car long-term. However, if you haven’t protected your car from day one – a good system should be able to improve you car considerably, with a notable difference and also continue to further protect you car the from the day you have applied the paint protection product.

Paint protection from car detailers are expensive. Why?

Simply because adds true value to the buyer (and to the vehicle) – and we aren’t talking about just a better shine. A good paint protection application gives an incredible glass shine and maintains the value of your new car. These are the reasons why people are simply prepared to pay an average of a $1000 for good paint protection. It also means less waxing and easier cleaning of your car when it gets dirty. Saving time and superior paint protection means more savings in the long run.

But does that means that all you have to do is to coat the car once and you can leave it in the hands of God to make it eternally shiny?

NO.

The importance of taking proper care of the car, i.e. washing and detailing is cannot be stressed enough; using reputable detailers is imperative. The golden rule of thumb will be to treat your car paintwork like you would your skin. If it’s good for your skin, it’s good for the car and if it won’t hurt your skin, it won’t damage your car paintwork.

In short, you get what you pay for and choosing the correct place to wash your car should be based on the amount of time spent cleaning your car properly and safely.

One simply cannot have a product that one simply wipes on within 30 minutes and is expected to protect the paint effectively. Paint Protection is a professional application and surfaces to be protected have to be prepared. DIY Kits of the same products professional dealers and detailers use begin at $160. The dealers’ price is around $1000 (for exactly the same product). More than 80% of protectants on the market today are of a limited basic Compound/core ingredient, be it wax, teflon, polymer or silicone and is just Rebadged, repacked or marketed differently.

The most superior product known through trial and testing, are products with Glass Plexin. Glassplexin has the properties of glass. It electromagnetically blends with the paint molecules and becomes part of the paint – unlike other products which simply lie on top. It is a silicate ion which has a negative charge and the properties of liquid glass, and is exclusively formulated to prepare, polish, seal and protect the paint finishes. Glass plexin repels water, and therefore repels grime and contaminants.

EA Detailer is the official partner of Sonax and uses their full range of products. Sonax GbmH is one of the world’s largest manufacturer of Car Care Chemicals. They are fervently endorsed officially by all German MarquesWe do not only uses their products, we adopt Sonax Detailing Process too – all delivery are qualified upon a 55 points Pre-Delivery Inspection.

9H/10H hardness is a rating on the Pencil Hardness Test, commonly used by manufacturers of clear and pigmented surface coatings. The Pencil Hardness test is used to determine the scratch resistance of a coating surface by using pencils to scratch the surface and rate the scratch resistance in relation to that pencils hardness and other materials of similar hardness.

Is the Pencil Hardness Test standardized

There are two different standards used in the pencil hardness test: ASTM D3363 and JIS K-5600-5-4.  Both require a different set of procedures and initial surface for coating to be applied to. This will allow various coatings, cured at different heats, to be tested without any other variables interfering.

The downfall with Pencil Hardness Test

The biggest concern with this testing method is the lack of control and standards.  Even when following a basic outline for standardized testing, different companies follow varied procedures that can skew the results of the hardness test.  One method is to lower the gram load weight of the pencil hardness tester.  The less pressure used in the tester, the less likely the surface is to scratch. This allows a tester to up the rating on their pencil hardness scale. This tactic is not outlined in the standardized testing, so it can go undetected by customers.  When choosing coatings based off the pencil hardness test, always look deeper into the testing methods as you are not always comparing “apples to apples.”

How does it apply to car paint protection coating?

Many brands boast 9H hardness, but you have to first know that the “H’ here is referring to pencil hardness, imagine using an array of pencils, small lines are drawn across the coating surface using graded pencils of increasing levels of hardness. No scratch is a pass and you move on to a harder grade. A standard pencil is graded at 2 HB in the US , a super hard technical drawing pencil is 7H, and the hardest is 10H. Coatings which are so hard that even the 10H pencil won’t scratch them receive a 10H rating to designate their hardness.

Is the coating force resistance?

Anything can be broken if it encounters enough force. However, EAD Diamond Foundation Coating are designed to increase your breakage resistance to an exceptional degree. Only the very hardest, most severe blows may damage your actual paint work. In some events or accidents, an EAD Diamond Foundation Coating will completely absorb the shock and perfectly protect your car surface – exactly as it was designed to do.

Getting scratches on your car’s paint job tends to be a day-to-day occurrence, but for some, it’s a very huge concern. Many people fear having their car scratched for good reason. Your car is an expensive purchase and want to keep it in the best shape possible. To save your car’s skin, what you’ll need is a good protective coating to keep that surface smooth and shiny.

One of the few types of Paint Protection Coating that works well for your car’s surface: Glass coating and Ceramic coating. We often get asked what is the difference between these two types of Paint Protection Coatings?

 The Technical Details

When people think of glass, they usually think of the transparent materials found as windows in buildings and cars. However, strictly speaking the term glass describes a state of matter where the particles within a material are randomly arranged. The definition of glass given by the ASTM (American Society of the International Association for Testing and Materials) which describes glass as an “inorganic, amorphous, product of a rapidly cooled melt”. By this definition, rapidly-cooled metals can also be said to be glassy. Hence, terms such as glassy, amorphous and vitreous tend to describe a material with randomly-arranged atomic structure. Did that bore you? We almost fell asleep.

 The really Technical Details

There are some structural differences between glass and ceramic on an atomic scale, even though they can have exactly the same composition. For example, silica glass has the same composition as quartz (crystallized silica). However, in glass, the atoms are arranged dynamically; whereas silica crystals have a very ordered structure. It is possible to turn a glass into a ceramic; by heating it up. This allows rearrangement from a random to an ordered structure and an ordered structure is more stable than a disordered one.

So how are they the same?

While each Paint Protection Coating has its own characteristics, there are many similarities that can be applied across the board regardless of brand. Glass Coatings and Ceramic Coatings are the latest and most revolutionary way to protect the paint on your vehicle. Through the use nanotechnology, these coatings bind to the surface creating an extremely durable and protective layer. These coatings separate your vehicle’s paint and interior surfaces from the harsh elements of the environment. Both types of coating actually bond to your paintwork so cannot be removed by ordinary means, for example, washing your car.

So which coating should I choose?

In ceramic coating, its compounds protect your car against weather, bird droppings, scratches, dust, spills and other things that ordinary wax usually cannot fix, as well has having a durability that lasts for 4-6 months. A ceramic-coating process required heating in order to make sure the bonding is complete. It is in fact a 70s technology.

In glass coating, it bonds to your vehicle’s paint on a molecular level almost immediately upon application. This ensures that the car’s paint remain insulated against chemical attacks from all forms of environmental pollutants. Professional applicators have mostly converted to glass coating because of its durability and ease of application.

Choosing between the two is not too difficult if you know what you want.

If you prefer the quick and easy way, seek durability, glass-like shine and more protection for your paint, you might want to try ceramic-coating products. If you are willing to spend more and are willing to wait a bit longer for the coating process than a glass coating is for you.

Contrary to marketing myth, all coatings have a life span and eventually need to be reapplied. The right way to ensure the lasting effect is to engage professional detailer who possess in-depth technical know how to treat your vehicle right.

EA detailer uses certified coatings like EAD Diamond Foundation Coating and EAD Titanium Glass Coating on your car. To find out more information on how we can assist further or to make an appointment with us:
